Creating Map Training activities for local partners in East Kalimantan created as a form of follow-up of the Project Mapping and Transparency Kalimantan. The training aims to provide the latest knowledge to local partners in East Kalimantan so that data that had been collected from various training activities and competitions in Samarinda and Balikpapan can be further used for the purposes of government and community in the city. This training activities was taught by using a map-making software QGIS.
This QGIS Training was held for 4 days in Kafetaria and Lobby of Hotel Aston Samarinda with 3 participants, Arief Rahman and Suyono from the local partners, and Muhammad Nahrowi, as the winner of previous competition. This event was solely for these particular participants for Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) and Wikimedia Indonesia felt responsible to help them deepen understanding of using and doing map analysis. The map that was used is local, however the training material was very broad so that they can process the data they way they want and/or need to be. We used the self-taught learning method where our trainer gave them some materials then the participants got assignments with those materials. This method made the participants understand and remember the process and would hopefully make them independent in the future.
The first day of training began with fixing some data that would be used in the QGIS training. The first material was to fix tags and data information in Samarinda City which would make the data quality when making maps be better. We used Java OpenStreetMap (JOSM) to fix data of schools, hospitals, mosques, churches and economy facilities. The tags and information reference was taken from HOT Indonesia here. After succeed fixing Samarinda’s data, participant then took those data with HOT Export that later on would be used for the second day of QGIS Training.
In the second day, participants was given materials of Geographical Information System (GIS) such as the definition, kinds of data that can be used in GIS, the elements of map. Introduction to GIS is considered important to learn before continuing the next step. Participants then installed QGIS in their own computers and learned about the interface of QGIS, and tools to move, zoom, and pick an object in a map. The training was closed with the materials they had learned before that are, adding data, selecting and filtering data with its own attribute, then saving the data selected as a new one. The focus of the second day of training was to make the participants fully understands the first process of spatial data with using QGIS.
The third was continued with symbology and labelling material. Participant was learning of how the selected data would appear in an informative way to be understood easily. These materials was important for the data was gonna be read and used by public. Symbology material covered of learning to color objects, and choosing the valid symbol/icon for the data.
For the last day of QGIS training in Samarinda, participants was laerning about making layout in the data that was used before to make it become a printable map. The participants then learned about layout materials such as, choosing the right paper size, making map title, making map scale and compass directions, making legends in map and inset map.
These maps later will be printed and given to the local government. See the newest news about this activity in the next blog! 😀
