Tutorial Using OSMTracker

Nowadays, there are lot of android application for OpenStreetMap Data Collector. Each application provide some excellent features such as editor tool, validation tool and data collection. One of the application that we use recently is  OSMTracker. This application allows us to record our track, save waypoints and take photos and videos (geotagging). The output of our recording can be export into GPX file format and we can open it through JOSM or upload it directly into OpenStreetMap website.

To use this application, we need to insatall it first through Android AppSotre. You can accesss this application on your android smartphone and then type “OSMTracker” in search box or you can download it directly through this link. After success install OSM Tracker, there are some setting you need to do :

  • Open OSMTracker and choose Setting menu which located in upper right corner on your screen (See the picture below)

  • Scroll down and go to  GPS Logging Interval setting. Here you will some setting options.

  1. GPS Logging Interval. This setting inform you how often you want the application to record your track. The default setting is 0 second, which means OSMTracker will record your track in every second. It might be drain your battery quickly. You can change the interval  based on you needs. For example every 2 seconds.
  2. External Storage Directory. This setting shows where you tracks will be saved. Default setting of this option is in your internal memory device with a folder named  “osmtracker”
  3. One Directory per Track. If you activate this feature, for every track that you saved it will create another folder inside osmtracker folder.
  4. Filename for named track. this setting defines the file name of your tracks. Defaul setting of this option is your name tracks, date and time of track taken. You can ignore this option if you do not want to change it.
  5. Screen Always On. If you activate this feature, it will make your smartphone screen always on while you tracking using it. This feature decrease your battery life rapidly.
  6. Button Preset. Do you have your own preset? You can access it using this menu.
  7. Background Map. This feature used to show OpenStreetMap background in your track.
  8. Map tile provider. You can change your map background using this menu. choose which background do you want to use. For instance you want to use “cyclemap”

Now OSMTracker is ready to use. To get started, activate GPS feature in your device and in main page, choose plus icon (+) on the top of the application to start tracking.

You will be directed to Track Logger page. If you haven’t activate GPS feature in your device, OSMTracker will tell you to activate the feature. In top of the page, you can see how good the accuracy you get and how much the gps signal strength from your smartphone. One thing to remember, you cannot access all the features in Track Logger if this application still does not get your position. You can recognize that if you haven’t see any accuracy information in top of the page. If your accuracy still more than 10m, I suggest you to not do tracking yet. If you insist to do that, you will have very bad result. It would be very far away from your actual position.Wait until your accuracy less than 10m.

Track Logger

For mark waypoints, you can directly choose the object icons in Track Logger page. For example, if you want to map a restaurant, you can choose Amenity icon and then choose Restaurant. But, in OSMTracker you cannot give additional information like the restaurant name, the owner, the address, etc. To give additional information, you must choose Text note icon in Track Logger page.

If you want to save your tracking result, you can go to Diskette icon in the top page. After that, you can see the track result in Tracklist in The Main Page of OSMTrackker. You can see your track result with OSM background with these steps:

  • Choose your track
  • Choose Icon 1  icon in upper right corner of the Track dDetails page.
  • Then choose “display track

You will be directed to OpenStreetMap track display. In this page you can see various symbol. The blue line is your tracking line, the yellow star symbol is the waypoints and the yellow people symbol is the end of your track.

In Track Detail page you can also change the name of your tracklog, give description of your track, add tag, export your track into GPX file format, and also change the type of your file (whether it is Private, Public, Trackable or Identifiable). If you want to convert your track log into GPX to open in JOSM, you need to convert through  icon  in Track Detail page. OSMTracker will convert your track into GPX format and save it in internal storage of your smartphone (with assumption you didn’t change the folder name and the path in application setting). In this Track Detail you can also upload your Track log in OpenStreetMap using these steps:

Adding OSM Tracker Data into JOSM

After succedd to upload OSM Tracker data in GPX file format to OpenStreetMap website, now we are going to learn how to add that file into JOSM that can be used as a background to help us mapping in OpenStreetMap. These are some steps that you can follow :

  • Please find your GPX data from OSM Tracker in your android smartphone file manager. You can find it on folder that named  “osm tracker”

Screenshot_2015-01-14-12-22-43

  • Copy your GPX file to your computer/laptop using  usb or email, etc
  • Open JOSM on your computer/laptop
  • Click file then open after that find the GPX file that you have copied into your computer before.

JOSM

  • Here is example of OSM Tracker’s look in JOSM

JOSM 2

  • You can use that file to start editing in JOSM but you have to download OSM data first with clik  file then choose download from OSM.

Now, you have learned about how to use OSMTracker as an alternative for GPS. Now it is your turn to use it on the field. Happy Mapping!
